Superior tibiofibular joint

  • The superior tibiofibular joint (also proximal tibiofibular joint, tibiofibular articulation, latin: articulatio tibiofibularis) is an immobile, flat synovial joint between the tibia and the fibula.

The articular surfaces of the superior tibiofibular joint are the following:

    • fibular surface of the lateral tibial condyle,
    • head of the fibula.

The fibular surface of the lateral tibial condyle and the head of the fibula are covered by an articular capsule that is reinforced by the following ligaments: anterior ligament of the fibular head (lig. capitis fibulae anterius) and the posterior ligament of the fibular head (lig. capitis fibulae posterius).

The superior tibiofibular joint is a limited movement joint.
