Sternothyroid

The sternothyroid (also sternothyroid muscle, latin: musculus sternothyroideus) is a muscle belonging to the infrahyoid neck muscles that extends between the sternum and the thyroid cartilage.
Origin
The sternothyroid originates from the manubrium of the sternum.
Insertion
The sternothyroid inserts onto the thyroid cartilage of the larynx.
Action
Upon contraction the sternothyroid muscle depresses the thyroid cartilage.
Innervation
The sternothyroid is innervated by the anterior rami of the 1st to 3rd cervical spinal nerves (C1 - C3) via the ansa cervicalis of the cervical plexus.
