Scalene muscles

  • The scalene muscles are three paired muscles in the lateral part of the neck: the anterior, middle and posterior scalene muscles.

All the scalene muscles extend between cervical vertebrae and ribs.

The anterior and middle scalene muscles lift the first rib and bends the neck to the same side as the contracting muscle, while the posterior scalene muscle lifts the second rib and flexes the neck to the same side.

The innervation of the scalene muscles is provided by the cervical spinal nerves (C3 - C6).
