Anterior tibial vein

  • The anterior tibial vein (latin: vena tibialis anterior) is a blood vessel formed by the venae comitantes of the dorsalis pedis artery.

The anterior tibial vein arises near the inferior extensor retinaculum, ascends in the interosseous membrane, pierces it at the proximal end, and at the distal border of the popliteus muscle the anterior tibial vein unites with the posterior tibial vein to form the popliteal vein.

Along its course the anterior tibial vein is accompanied by the anterior tibial artery.

The anterior tibial vein collects venous blood from the ankle joint, knee joint, tibiofibular joint, and the anterior portion of the lower leg.
